The relationship between NATAN Worldwide Disaster Relief and the people of the Philippines is one built on years of shared resilience. In late 2025, NATAN returned to the islands once again, proving that even during challenging times at home, the Israeli commitment to global solidarity remains a core priority.

This most recent mission was not an isolated event; it was a continuation of a journey that began over a decade ago.

2013: The Shadow of Super Typhoon Haiyan

In November 2013, the Philippines was struck by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. The devastation was near-total in many regions, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced.

NATAN responded immediately, deploying medical teams to the hardest-hit areas. Our volunteers worked through the wreckage to provide emergency medical care and, critically, began the work of psychosocial stabilization for survivors who had lost everything in the storm. This mission established the deep roots of trust and partnership that NATAN has maintained with the Filipino people for over twelve years.

2025: Healing After the Tremors

In October 2025, the call for help came again—this time following a series of devastating earthquakes. NATAN deployed a dedicated team of medical and psychosocial professionals to reach remote villages in the regions of Cebu and Davao Oriental.

Medical and Emotional Support

The team operated in areas where healthcare access is a daily struggle, made even more difficult by the disaster.

  • Primary Care: Our doctors and nurses treated hundreds of residents for conditions exacerbated by displacement and stress.

  • Treating the Invisible: The team quickly realized that the pervasive fear of aftershocks had left families terrified to return to their homes. NATAN integrated psychosocial support into every medical interaction, helping survivors process their trauma while they slept in makeshift tents.

Empowerment Through Partnership

A central element of NATAN’s philosophy is that the most effective aid is that which strengthens the community from within. In 2025, as in our previous missions, we collaborated closely with Operation Blessing Philippines.

Rather than only providing direct treatment, our specialists conducted intensive training sessions for local “gatekeepers”—teachers, community leaders, and healthcare workers. By equipping these local figures with the tools of Psychological First Aid, we ensured that a sustainable support system would remain in place long after our team returned to Israel.

A Message of Global Solidarity

For the people in the affected villages, the arrival of the Israeli team provided more than just medicine; it provided the comfort of being seen by the global community. For the volunteers, representing the values of compassion and professional excellence abroad offered a powerful sense of purpose.

As one team member noted, the mission proved that “even in difficult times, we can share our knowledge and humanity.”

Commitment to the Future

Looking forward from 2026, the work in the Philippines has laid the groundwork for ongoing support. Our future focus will shift toward long-term public health initiatives, including nutrition and dental care, utilizing the same mobile technology we have deployed in other regions.

From the winds of 2013 to the tremors of 2025, NATAN remains committed to standing with the Philippines. “When the need is there, so are we.”
