Background: 

In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, (known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda) was one of the strongest storms ever recorded. The storm devastated the Philippines, killing thousands and displacing millions. NATAN teams deployed immediately, staying for seven months. 

Impact:

This operation included 8 delegations and lasted for seven months. The relief mission focused in the Guiuan region on Samar island. It began with medical and psychological relief, moved on to training local professionals and targeted populations, and concluded with community development initiatives. NATAN’s efforts included building a Community Center in Pagnamitan, the only concrete building in the village resistant to typhoon damage. 

Impact in numbers: 

  • NATAN provided emergency medical treatment to 1,500 children
  • NATAN medical team vaccinated 600 residents against tetanus
  • NATAN trained 1,500 teachers to support traumatized children 
  • Basic psychosocial training was given to 117 community leaders
  • 5,400 children participated in post-traumatic rehabilitation. 
  • Special courses were also conducted for 100 medical and social work professionals.
